Traditional materials such as oils and lime are available as raw mediums, allowing them to be explored and exploited by decorative craftsmen to the fullest extent possible. In contrast, as acrylic-based decorative painting products were developed, they were formulated and recommended to produce specific finishes. This has resulted in the introduction of a confusing array of overlapping products from a variety of manufacturers, and has made it difficult for professional decorative craftsmen to truly understand the fundamental properties of this versatile medium.
Unlike other decorative products, the Proceed product line was designed as a "tool kit" of high-performance paints, glazes, pigment dispersions, textures, and ancillary products that were specifically designed to put control of color, texture and sheen into the hands of the decorative craftsman.
Instead of being designed to produce a specific finish, Proceed products are designed to be intermixable. This allows the decorative painter to combine Proceed products to replicate any finish they desire or to develop new and unique "products" of their own design.

At the first level, Proceed products are capable of being applied just as they come from the container to produce professional-quality decorative finishes in one or two passes around the room. Used at this level, Proceed products are ideal for situations where an economical fast finish is needed, as well as for user-friendly finishes for those new to decorative painting.
At the second level, Proceed products may be intermixed, allowing the knowledgeable decorative professional to access much of the formulation range of acrylics. Using this approach, as new products and finishes are introduced to the market, the professional decorative painter will find that they are usually able to duplicate these products by developing blends of Proceed products that they are already familiar with. Of greater significance, this capability allows the decorative craftsman to engage in the design of new combinations of materials to develop finishes of their own.
At the third level, professional painters have found that they are able to incorporate their own aggregates and locally-available materials into Proceed textures to literally develop products that are unique to their practice. Golden cannot guarantee the results of such mixtures, of course, so use of the toolkit at this level is recommended only for the most advanced practitioners with an intimate understanding of materials.
To further the cause of helping painters understand contemporary decorative products, the product line has adapted the generic product naming convention developed by the The Professional Decorative Painters Association - a non-profit organization supported by Decorative Painting Schools and manufacturers.
